Unlucky us to have been here. The worst wonton noodle soup ever. The noodles were pale yellow and has a mushy texture, while the wontons had an unpleasingtasting meat filling. Beef chowfoon was bland. The seafood in our crispy panfried noodles were almost tasteless. Clams in black bean sauce was laced with basil and was more Thai style,, unlike what we are familiar with in other Chinese places. This may be a decent seafood place, because another table had some deep fried fish that looked and smelled delicious. My kids even noticed how bad the dishes were compared to other places we've been to. This place is not authentic Hong Kong cuisine, not even close. I do not like to give reviews such a poor rating but I feel that the typical dishes that we typically order are Chinese restaurant standards should meet a certain expectation. This placed failed in quality and price. Quantity is not relevant considering quality is not up to our expectation. The waitress we had was not at all friendly. The main waiter was as warm and welcoming as the waitress.

Appearances...so deceiving. This restaurant could definitely use an update and some maintenance to the exterior and interior but food is tasty. Seated quickly by a very nice man who was friendly and helpful throughout our entire dinner. This is a family style restaurant so best to order a few dishes and share to get the whole experience (as well as taste more dishes!). Dishes that were ordered at our table: crab meat and fish mow soup, salted fish fried rice, beef chow fun, whole fried tilapia in a ginger sauce, shrimp with garlic chives, and snow pea tips. Almost everything tasted good. I didn't care for the fried rice, would not order again. Tilapia was good! Fried perfectly with a nice sauce. Snow pea tips are always good anywhere that I have been, and Lucky Star is not an exception. Soup was ok, kinda bland. Extensive menu, will have to come back and order the duck and try some other items. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of seafood options that my friend wanted to try. Other than that, service was great and I didn't leave hungry!

6/9/15 **Updated review from 3 stars to 4 stars** I've dined here a few times since my last review and been impressed with the quality of food and friendly service. I would recommend the giant, single serving oyster and Peking duck with steamed buns.

Great for the areas and best place in the st petersburg area. Pricey but the service is good and people are friendly. Also they have many hard to find and authentic dishes.

ThIs place WAS the king for a very long time in the Pinellas area for Authentic Chinese food...or Hong Kong style on correct terms. The important word here is "WAS". They have lost it in every one of their aspect. Food, service, quality and creativity...down the toilet. In Pinellas it was dethroned by ABC Seafood on 54th. People who read this wether before of after they have eaten here will click useful!

I've been coming to lucky star for 7+ years, and they have a very authentic Chinese taste. That said, some dishes are better than others, and you have to know what to order. I recommend these dishes: Pekin Duck ( be sure to ask for the steamed rolls) Seafood Claypot Gailan (Chinese Broccoli ) & Chinese Mushrooms Snow pea tips (you can ask for steamed) Potstickers Chicken w black bean sauce Streamed fish (fresh from the tank!) Swimming shrimp (steamed and fresh!) The sizzling steak is a little bit tough, and the sweet & sour chicken doesn't have much chicken in it. Stick to the seafood, and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy all !!

Oh yes! I found another Cantonese restaurant near my house! Their hours are wonky, and when they open at 1:00pm on Saturday, don't expect the rice to be ready until at least 1:30. Definitely more of a dinner and late night place. While the exterior looks a little desolate and old fashioned. The inside is very clean and updated. I would have to say that if a traditional wedding banquet was needed (either Chinese or Vietnamese style) and just had to be in St Pete, that Lucky Star would be the best choice. The only thing missing is the dragon and phoenix wall. This is a Hong Kong seafood house, this is not NYC basement food. Order Scallops and Oysters on the shell with Sa Cha sauce and glass noodles. The flavor is enhanced with chopped garlic and cilantro, cover your rice or noodles in it. Razor clams, lobster, crabs, shrimp, squid--- it is all here, clearly noted on the menu in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Feel free to spout the names of Canto dishes that are not on the menu (you know, the ones you miss eating), because the waiter has your back. Even though he might feel a little cold at first, he will warm up to you if you if you know (or pretend to know) what you are wanting. The food is deliciously charred, veggies are crisp, and meat is tender--- all doused in oil. This is commonplace. The duck is a bit too expensive here, for a whole at $35. That is a banquet price. If you are looking for the same quality duck for $18.99, that place is in Clearwater on Drew St. I was surprised by the fabulous service we received. Even though we were handed an American menu, gladly to find underneath was the separate menu that has the real food. This restaurant caters to everyone, and is well disguised as a chop suey house. That being said, you can order some badass Soy Sauce Chow Mein here--- the variation being that there are tiny bits of squid and shitaki mushroom. The noodles have the perfect amount of char and so do the snow peas. Speaking of which, snow pea leaves (while the best) are not always in season. Ask for Ong Choi as a back-up plan, and ask for extra garlic. The garlic is perfectly roasted by the wok. As you can tell, I was severely impressed by Lucky Star. Maybe you will be, too.

I went in again this past week and tried 2 new dishes because my friend comes here sometimes like me. The seasoned huge cooked oyster was awesomely delicious! Like always, i ate their special tofu and my brother and his gf ate that particular dish and loved it. I also ate the snail black bean sauce was yummy. The roast duck was okay. I tasted better i think. Overall. Good meal. Service can improve a little, but she was nice. Btw, their soy sauce chicken isn't good when i also ate there for July 4th.

This one was close to a five star rating. The food was very good and my meal consisted of Sizzling Garlic Shrimp, pork egg roll and a Yang Chow fried rice to go. The garlic shrimp were in a nice brown sauce and had a good flavor as well as a generous portion of shrimp. The egg roll was pretty good. The Yang Chow fried rice was delicious. The service was good and this restaurant is open later than most. I'll be back.

Once in a lifetime experience--and I mean that. Been eating Chinese food (SF and NYC) for sixty-plus years, and this was close to a low. Everything tasted a bit "off"--old cooking oil, sauces too sweet or too salty. The place was dreadfully understaffed, so we were in a room packed with tables still holding the dirty dishes and remains of meals from people long gone before we got there. Stick with Hom Zee.

This place is THE best Chinese restaurant in Pinellas. If you want family style dishes cooked for Asian people, come here. I would say 90% of the customers are Asian, I think that says enough right there. If you want buffet style food, don't come here. They have live seafood too. Ginger lobster is legendary. I have tried ABC Chinese restaurant and still comeback to luckystar BC their food is better in quality.

My family and I probably eat here once a week. We have never had a bad dinner. The prices are reasonable, the portions are plentiful, and the staff is friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Looked questionable on the outside but had the chicken in black bean sauce and it was very good ! I recommend this place.

To those of you who didn't like Lucky Start it is because your pallet had been conditioned to accept the dumbed down version of Americanized concoctions that are meant too pass for "Chinese" food. Lucky Start does offer some of those dishes to the untrained diner but you are in for a real treat if you move over to the "Authentic Hong Kong" menu. The fish, caught straight from the tank before it is cooked and braised with fresh ginger and green onion is so full of flavor and tenderness you want to cry! This is what those who have Chinatown in NYC are lucky enough to experience. Forget about sweet & sour pork. Try beef & chicken in birds nest or chicken steamed in lotus leaf. You WON'T be disappointed!

One of two places in town that you can get fish maw soup. The other place is ABC on 54th AVE N. Over the years, the quality of the soup has gotten worse so have the other dishes, in both places. According to the other review, I guess you have to know what to order. I still don't. I was in this week and ordered the following. Sizzling Beef, Salted Fish Fried Rice, Sauteed Snow Pea tips, Special Fish Maw Soup, and Deep Fried Chitlings. There were only 2 of us but I guess our eyes were bigger than our stomach. The ony things came out good were the Sauteed Snow Pea tips which hardly anyone can mess up, and the Fried Chitlings, the pickled cabbage and the sweet&sour sauce were good. The Sizzling Beef tasted horrible. Both the sauce and the beef. The worse being the beef. Its texture and aftertaste resembled those of meat that turned brown after being in the cooler for too long. It didn't look good, and it tasted worse. The Salted Fish Fried Rice should be called just fried rice with a few snow peas and a few crumbled piece of salted fish. It tasted bland. The Special Fish Maw soup had hardly any fish maw in it but lots of imitation crab meat, eggs, and bits of shrimp. It should had been called Special Egg Drop soup. I don't know if I'd go back. Ever since they opened, I chose to go to them instead of ABC for 2 reasons. 1. The waitstaff, which probably are family members, is a lot friendlier. I've always felt welcomed here. 2. The fish maw soup which was really good at one time when compared to ABC's. I know it's not easy to maintain an authentic Chinese restaurant in this town but if you're going to do something, do it right, or don't do it at all. It doesn't matter if you're the only other place in town that serves a particular cuisine.

Definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area. Good sauces, not too salty, and generous portions. They have two menus: one paper, that they'll give you at first if you're trying to order to-go. Go for the big menu that looks more permanent: this is where the good things live.

ewwwwyyy ......This restaurant needed to cut down on their salt, didn't any of the chefs taste their food at all? was salt on sale or something ? We ordered 9 course family style dinner, and 6 out of 9 were bad, and seriously...they added Chinese broccoli in every veggie dishes, i'd rather eat ramen than going back to this salt tank.
